Solar energy is one of the most well recognized alternative source of energy. Solar energy harnesses the power of the sun through the use of photovoltaic panels that store and energy and convert it into a usable form. Solar panels can be purchased as small portable units for several hundred dollars which can be used for small appliances, computers, or to keep car batteries charges. A person could also have their entire household fitted with photovoltaic panels which have the capacity to store enough power to run the meet all of that households needs. This kind of a set-up costs around $20,000. There are currently around 10,000 houses in the United States that are using only solar systems as an alternative source of energy to supply all of their energy needs. Solar energy works best for those who have south facing roofs with lots of exposure and limited shade.

The modern wind turbines in use today are for more technologically advanced than those used in years past. Wind energy also does not produce any pollution and requires very little maintenance and upkeep. The triple bladed windmills have few moving parts and therefore are very easy to keep running. Wind energy is best for those who live in windy climates. Batteries can be purchased to store additional energy for calm days.
Biotechnology has also provided a way to use biomass, organic materials made from plants and animal residues and wastes.
