Environment: Sustainable Development Defined

from:

People continuously impact the environment. Sustainable development is the method of improving the results of that impact. The goal of it is to meet all the needs of humans but at the same time still preserving and maintaining the Earth. The goal is to hold on to the ability to provide for the needs of humans not just right now, but also in the future. The most common definition of sustainable development comes from the Brundtland Commission. Sustainable development is, according to this commission, development that, "meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."

This definition applies, not just to the environment, but also to the economy and the sociopolitical areas of the world too in many areas. Yet, the focus for many people is simply on improving the environment so that all people will have access to everything they need right now as well as in the future. This is no small undertaking, especially considering the number of natural resources being used at increasing fast paces. Yet, every person, in every part of the world, can contribute in small or large ways to improve the overall outcome.

In the sector of environmental sustainability, one of the three main focuses, the goal is to look at and make sure that all current in use processes of interaction with the environment are keeping in the goal of leaving the environment pristine, or as pristine as possible naturally. To break this down, there is a chart, which is used to monitor where natural resources stand.

Those that are unsustainable are those where nature's ability to replenish the resource is slower than the way that humans are consuming it. A steady state economy, or environmental equilibrium is where there is steady state economy and nature is replenishing renewable at the same pace as consumption. When there is an environmental renewal, you have nature producing at a faster rate than consumption and this is called sustainable development.

A close look at the environment often shows just how important it is to consider sustainable development in everyday lives. For example, the pursuit of oil has lead to rising costs and worrisome stocks simply because there is such a limited amount of crude oil available. Yet, there are many other areas where there is still a risk to be taken into consideration beyond oil. Each area of the environment must be carefully considered to insure that everyone has what the need now, and well into the future.

While temperatures rise, denialists reach lower | Bad Astronomy

Over the weekend, two amazingly bad articles were published about climate change. Both were loaded with mistakes, misinterpretations, and outright misinformation, and are simply so factually wrong that they almost read like parodies. Just so we’re clear here. The first was in the Wall Street Journal. The article, called No Need to Panic About Global Warming , is a textbook example of misleading ...
